Former NBA superstar, Shaquille O’Neal, has a huge heart to go along with his large stature. He quietly helps many Atlanta families in their time of need, often without fanfare.
After a 13-year old boy accidentally shot himself while on Instagram Live last week, Shaq has offered to pay the family’s funeral expenses to bury the boy.
According to NBC 11 in Atlanta, Malachi Hemphill was on his Instagram Live stream, when he tried to show his friends a gun. While attempting to put the safety on, the gun went off, killing the boy.
On Friday, April 13th, Shaq traveled to the boys’ home to offer his condolences to the family and pay for the funeral. In a statement, O’Neal said “No mother should have to go through this. I can only imagine the pain that she and all of Malachi’s family must be feeling.”
The family did not have any insurance to bury their son. The retired Laker stepping up to help someone in need, is another reason why he is so beloved, especially here in Southern California.
The Hemphill family hopes their sons’ tragic death will be a reminder to parents to check their kids’ backpacks and rooms, and stay involved in their kids’ lives so it won’t happen to them.
