If you grew up in the 70’s, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who didn’t enjoy watching The Gong Show on television, and it’s outrageous host, Chuck Barris.
Barris passed away yesterday at the age of 87.
The Gong Show ran for two years on NBC from 1976-1978. Barris was not only the host of The Gong Show, but he created The Newlywed Game and The Dating Game.
The Gong Show was a talent spoof-type show, featuring people from all walks of life with REAL talent, and people who probably should have stayed at home. But those people were what made the show, because if you sucked, you got “gonged” off.
Barris was also a published author and songwriter, and is survived by Mary Rudolph, his wife of 16 years.
In honor of his passing, check out a short video of one of Barris’ most famous guests on The Gong Show, Gene Gene The Dancin’ Machine.
