Prince’s Secret Charitable Efforts Highlighted in New Mini-Doc

By Brian Ives

On Sunday morning, a new mini documentary was posted on the Facebook page “His Royal Highness,” which has served as an ad hoc Prince page over the past few months. The nearly eight minute film focuses on Prince’s charitable efforts, most of which were done in secret.

It begins with Geoffrey Canada, the founder of the Harlem’s Children Zone explaining how he discovered that Prince was interested in donating to his organization. He was told that “Prince” wanted to speak with him on the phone. “No, Prince Charles has already visited the Harlem’s Children Zone,” he said. The response he got: “‘No: Prince, Prince.'”

“‘You mean, the real Prince?'”

Mr. Canada describes their conversation: “I want to help you,” Prince told him. “I don’t want anybody to know about this. I just want to help you. I’m going to give the Harlem’s Children Zone a million dollars.”

He asked, “But we’re not going to tell anybody about it?”

Prince’s response: “It’ll ruin it if anybody hears. If you have been blessed the way that I have… I have to give back. And not to do so in a way that says, ‘What a wonderful person you are.'”

There are similar stories in the doc about how Prince approached former President Obama aide Van Jones and singer Janelle Monae. And Jones says, “Eighty-five to ninety-five percent — easily — of the people he helped, have no idea he helped them. No idea. [They] Would be stunned!”

The doc also features interviews with Prince’s brother and sister, as well as Alicia Garza, the co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, who noted that “He was one of the first donors to Black Lives Matter, it was important in its symbolism, it was important in its very clear statement, that he believed in what we were doing and what we were doing was important.”
